We’re all wrapped up in this viral trend. Here’s how to wear it.

Bows are trending — on hair accessories, jewelry, and even nails. We’ve been spotting them everywhere. But the big bow movement is tied to an even bigger trend: the coquette aesthetic, which has been popular for some time now. With 18 million views and 1.2 million creations on TikTok, the viral trend, which means “woman who flirts,” encourages women to embrace their inner femininity. The look is all about whimsical bows (like this white bow look by The House of Makeup), pearls, lace, and soft, playful, and elegant attire.

How do you wear it without feeling too cutesy or girly? We asked Dianne Vavra, style expert and owner of award-winning luxury vintage clothing and beauty boutique, VAVRA New York, in Huntington, NY. Vavra has a personal connection to the trend: “After battling breast cancer, I made a conscious decision to embrace my inner coquette to reclaim my self-confidence and femininity.” Here, she shares how to infuse a little coquette into your personal style.

What is Coquette?

Coquette is all about channeling your inner girlhood with style and accessories that are romantic, feminine, and playful. The key looks behind the trend include:

• Hair bows

• Flowing fabrics: silk or lace dresses or skirts

• Pearl necklaces

• Ribbons

• Soft pink accessories

• Headbands

• Dangly earrings

• Brooches

How to Wear Coquette

Vavra says to “infuse your personal style with small touches that reflect current trends,” including coquette. You can incorporate subtle additions to elevate your outfit without overwhelming it and keep it within your comfort zone. Try a charming belt cinched around an oversized sweater, stack delicate vintage bracelets into your wristwear collection, and experiment with winged eyeliner to achieve a captivating doe-eyed look. Here are some other easy ways to try the trend:

• Add soft pastel colors to your wardrobe.

• Embrace vintage-inspired pieces, such as handbags, jewelry, and glasses.

• Wear a blouse with ruffles.

• Tie a bow or knot around your waist for a more feminine touch.

• Tuck a sweater into the waistband of your pants and or a skirt.

“Hair bow hair accessories, vintage rhinestone bow brooches are a top seller at VAVRA New York,” says Vavra. “Use them in different ways: attached to a hair tie with a high pony or messy bun, on a handbag, or attached to the belt loop on your jeans to add a touch of sparkle,” she says.

Bigger than bows: Floral brooches are in bloom this season and are part of the popular, feminine coquette fashion trend, says Vavra. Photo: VAVRA New York.
