Fall Hair Color Trends

Samantha Grover, Wella Color Expert, gives us this season’s color forecast.

As predictable as crisp weather and changing leaves, fall ushers in a change in hair color. We tend to see warmer, richer, and more vibrant shades every autumn, but a specific blonde, brunette, or red always dominates the season. Pretty Local asked Samatha Grover, owner of Signature Hair Salon in Yaphank and Wella Color Expert, to tell us the must-have tones.

Grover says this season, there are a couple of over-arching themes dictating the color trends. First: longevity. “Consumer behavior has changed from what it was years ago; people don’t want to come into the salon every three to four months for color,” she says. “They want color that lasts six to seven months—with maybe just a toner or glaze in between to bring back warmth and correct and unwanted tones,” she says.

The other big trend is customization. No one color will work on everyone. It depends on the length of your hair, the cut, etc., says Grover. “If someone has a lot of layers, they have to have a more solid color, or their hair will look like a checkerboard,” she says. “In-depth consultations are key to finding out what looks best on you,” she says.

So, longer-lasting, “lived-in " color that’s customized just for you? We love the sound of that. But what does that look like? We asked Grover for a few examples. Here are some gorgeous fall looks from the Signature Hair Salon team.

Bright and Balanced Blonde

“Blondes right now are brighter and healthier. We’re seeing warm tones mixed with diffused blends—and little to no ribbons. It looks like it was kissed by the sun on top with more impact on the bottom. It’s ideal because you can go months without needing a full lightening service, maybe just a toner or glaze in between.”

Vintage Brunette

Brunettes are taking on a more lived-in feel. “They’re going away from balayage all over their head. They’re going darker on the ends, but keeping the hair around the face brighter and softer—as if your hair was up in a ponytail all summer and just the perimeter got lighter and little bit on your ends.”

Classic Copper

“Last season’s Cowboy Copper isn’t going anywhere because it’s a classic shade—not too bright, not too brown. It has the perfect amount of depth to it. Yet it’s still bright enough to be noticeable from across the room. I think that’s why people fell in love with it. It has that balance where it doesn’t look hollow; it doesn’t look colored. It’s like, ‘Ooh, is that her natural color?’”
