A softer take on black mascara; this look is all about subtle definition.

Growing up, my blue-eyed, red-haired mother always wore brown or black-brown mascara, while I, a brunette with dark eyes, swiped on the blackest black I could find to make my brown eyes pop. Well, Mom was ahead of her time because the softer shade of mascara has been having a major moment lately—and not just for those with light eyes. Brown is the new black!

East Hampton-based makeup artist Hana Islami agrees. “It’s all I wear,” she says. “I love how soft it looks.” Brown mascara is more subtle than bold black and defines lashes without being overpowering or harsh. It’s perfect for daytime or a more natural look.

Islami loves the Yves Saint Laurent Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara in Uninhibited Brown, $33. “It has a hint of burgundy, so it really makes brown eyes pop,” but adds that it works on all shades. Another personal fave: “Clinique Lash Power Mascara Long-Wearing Formula in Dark Brown, $26, if you like a lengthening mascara and a more natural look,” she says.

If you’re a clean beauty fan, Pretty Local likes Tower 28 MakeWaves Lengthening + Volumizing Mascara in Drift, $20, a vegan formula in a rich espresso brown. At the drugstore, try L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara in Latte Brown, $10, a new shade for line.
